Walking Together is a workshop that can be tailored for various relationships: Indigenous, Nation to Government, Nation to Industry, organizations that hire Indigenous people and organizations that are service providers to Indigenous people.
As Indigenous people, we have experienced and continue to experience unhealthy relationships among ourselves.
The relationship between Indigenous people and government/industry is an important one. This relationship landscape is changing from elected chief & council with government/industry to traditional leadership with governmen/industry.
This workshop is geared towards organizations who employ Indigenous people and provide services to Indigenous people.
I can only share my story because that is my truth and experience of my life. My culture (way of life or life way) experience started when I was 6 years old. It started out in the ceremonial dancer capacity as a Hamatsa for my grandfather. I started singing in my mid-teen years, carving in my late teens. I learned to chant, conduct various ceremonies and became a speaker for various traditional leaders, for their ceremonies.I took the ultimate step of responsibility and picked up a standing/position that my paternal grandfather held. This position is different than what my dad and older brother are working with. I held my first potltach in August 2019.
Our lives are about relationships, personal and professional. I am grateful to know people like Wedlidi Speck, Rob Everson, Robert Joseph, Robert (Bob) Chamberlain, Ernest Alfred and others from the Kwakwaka'wakw who are doing wonderful things for our people, our land and our waters. We need to pull all of us together now, so that we are all one in our entire Being.
I have many years of work experience, seeing how colonialism affected our people.
Professionally, I have experience in the education field (Teacher's aid, substitute teacher, Career and Personal Planning Teacher, and Aboriginal Enhancement Agreement team member) hospitality industry (Front Desk Agent, Front Desk Supervisor, and Guest Services Supervisor), working with families who have children in care of MCFD, and Social Development Worker.
